“Whenever You Need Somebody” is a dance hit from 1985 performed by O’Chi Brown and written by the team of Stock Aitken Waterman. Brown’s version of the song would also make the soul singles chart, peaking at number eighty-eight.

In 1987, Rick Astley covered the track, and it would become the title track and second single from his multi-million selling debut album Whenever You Need Somebody, also written and produced by Stock Aitken Waterman.

It was a successful European hit for Astley, continuing the success of his first single “Never Gonna Give You Up“. The single reached number three on the UK singles chart. It did not chart in the U.S.

This Japan only EP CD compiles the main club mixes of four singles from Rick Astley‘s debut album “Whenever You Need Somebody“, and the first single off his second, “Hold Me In Your Arms“.

The “12″ Collection” was released in 1989.

Song Information

“Take Me To Your Heart” was written and produced by Stock Aitken Waterman, and released in 1988 as the second single off the album “Hold Me In Your Arms“. It was a success in the UK Singles Chart where it peaked at number eight and was ranked for eleven weeks. It was also a top ten hit in Germany and Ireland. Unlike most of Astley’s previous singles, it was never released in the U.S.

“She Wants To Dance With Me” was the first single off of Astley’s second album “Hold Me In Your Arms“. It was a success in the US, peaking at number six on the Billboard Hot 100, and also internationally, reaching number six in the UK Singles Chart.

“It Would Take A Strong, Strong Man” was released off his first album, and peaked at number ten in the US on Billboard Hot 100 the week of September 17, 1988.

“Together Forever” ascended to number one on the Billboard Hot 100 on June 18th, 1988. It was Astley’s second and final U.S. chart-topper.

“Never Gonna Give You Up” was released as the first single from Astley’s debut album. The song was a worldwide number-one hit, initially in the singer’s native United Kingdom in 1987, where it stayed at number one for five weeks and was the best-selling single of that year. In the US, it went all the way to number one the week of March 12, 1988.
