Massive Attack – Unfinished Sympathy (UK CD Maxi-Single)

“Unfinished Sympathy” was the second single from Massive Attack‘s 1991 debut album Blue Lines, and released on February 11, 1991. It features Shara Nelson on lead vocals, and is generally recognized as a pioneering song in the trip hop genre. It is also one of the group’s most successful singles, reaching #13 in the UK Singles Chart and #1 in the Dutch Top 40.

The song was also included in the 1993 film “Sliver” and its soundtrack.

It was produced and mixed by Massive Attack & Jonny Dollar, one of trip-hop’s main architects.

Remixes were commissioned to Paul Oakenfold (who at the time collaborated with Steve Osborne for his Perfecto productions), and Nellee Hooper, successful British composer/producer/remixer for big acts like Björk, No Doubt/Gwen Stefani, Madonna, Garbage, U2, Sneaker Pimps, and Soul II Soul.

About their name on the single’s artwork and disc, the group were forced to change their name due to the outbreak of the Gulf War in 1991. They were briefly known as “Massive”, and that’s how they are credited on this release.

Tina Turner covered “Unfinished Sympathy” for her 1996 album Wildest Dreams.
