Eurythmics – You Have Placed A Chill In My Heart (“Chill Mix” US 7″ Single)

“You Hace Placed A Chill In My Heart” was the final single from Eurythmics’ 1987 “Savage” album. As was the case with several brit pop songs, it made a mild impression in the US, peaking at number 64 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart the week of June 25, 1988. In the UK, it reached number fifteen.

The song was written by group members Annie Lennox and David A. Stewart, and produced by Stewart. The track is driven by a drum machine and is a mostly synth-based pop song. Lyrically, Lennox sings of mustering the power to leave a destructive relationship with a lover who does not return the affection she deserves (“…a woman’s just too tired to think / about the dirty ol’ dishes / in the kitchen sink“). She sounds powerful and soulful as ever.

In most single releases the album version was included as the lead track, sometimes backed with “Wide Eyed Girl” (another song from “Savage”) or an acoustic version of  “You Have Placed A Chill In My Heart”.

But a scarce remix was the lead track only in Germany and in one of three 7″ singles released in the US. It was called the “Chill Mix” and was remixed by Alan Moulder. He is considered one of the great producers of British Pop, having worked with Depeche Mode, U2, Shakespears Sister, as well as US bands Nine Inch Nails and The Smashing Pumpkins.

To my knowledge, the “Chill Mix” remains unavailable on CD.

On a personal note, what a fantastic song.
