About Me (12″ Version)
My name is Johann. I live in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Big music fan and serious record collector here.
Throughout the years I amassed a collection of around 3,000 items, comprised mainly of vinyl records and compact discs. Most of them are 12″ and cd singles. My passion for collecting them started thanks to radio.
In 1986, I discovered American Top 40 with Casey Kasem. I instantly became a loyal listener for many years. Billboard magazine was not available in Argentina at the time, so I documented every week’s chart on a notepad, and recorded the whole show on cassettes. There was also the European chart with a wealth of music not heard in the US. Soon after, I wanted to get some of those songs I heard and liked.
There was never an established singles market here, so buying full albums was my only option. When listening to my brandnew CD or LP, I noticed some of the songs sounded either different or were longer than those on American Top 40. This would usually lead to disappointment, as I liked the versions on the radio best. And that’s when I learned there was something called the single or radio version. Sometimes it was remixed, sometimes only edited to be shorter, often times both.
And then, there were the versions I would hear on parties and clubs, as well as some dance oriented shows on the radio. I started hearing and reading the terms extended version or remix, club or dance mix, dub version, acapella, you name it.
On my first trip to the US in late 1987, I was very excited to enter record stores and find a singles section. It was paradise! When I returned to Argentina, my suitcase had a fair amount of 7″, 12″, and cassette singles. So now, I could finally listen to those elusive versions from the radio. But, not always. Sometimes I would play my single, and heard the same version as found on the album it was extracted from. What the hell? I thought. For many years, the source for these radio mixes remained a mystery.
Bless the Internet. In 1997, I was browsing an online record store and learned of promotional records and CD’s. That’s when collecting became a big part of my life. I found excitement and challenges in hunting for hard to find albums and singles, especially those with promo-only versions.
Twelve years later, in the web 2.0 era, it is my pleasure to share many of these rarities with you.

Hi! I have the same passion of yours about radio promo’s and so on … I’ve been in US twice (1990 and 1992) and spent my life in looking for those radio promo versions.
I Was lucky enough to work for a local (italian) radiostation that used to have HitDisc subscription with tons of those rare versions.
I am time to time organizing them all and I wish to share them with you.
Can we keep in touch?
I see recently you don’t have more postings…
Matteo

your blogs a gr8 mix of 80/90′s stuff so far xx
i’d love 2 see more jody watley, jermaine stewart and maybe some rarer stuff from them and any other funky stuff that u can be bothered ‘blog-ifying
i love the madonna 7 inch/ radio edits saga – u would think that record companies have @ least a ‘few’ braincells [lol]
for a long while the ‘industry’ has regarded 12” mixes as a marketing tool and not a ‘product’
made me laff 2 think – the same again- kinda

Hola Johann,

Mario

Hi Johann, what a fab website. I myself am from the UK and have been collecting singles from the mid 80′s (Mainly 12″ singles) and then CD singles. Used to love the feeling of finding a new record shop and browsing through everything and finding real gems. Of course with the internet now it’s quite the same but I still come accross blogs (like yours) with rarities which I haven’t been able to find myself. Once again, thanks for sharing and keep up the good work. You’re a star. Joe
Comment by Joe— September 22, 2009 #
Well, what can I say? I supposed I felt alone in this world, doing exactly what you, both, were doing in different places. It is not only a deja vu to me, it was my life in that moment. I was not only listening and copying all the Casey American Top 40, I did my own rank every single week. My Top 100, every week during 5 years !! I still have this information in Buenos Aires. I hope my mom don’t take it all away…it’s a precious for me.
Johann, you know I admire you, they way you write, they way you feel and the way you make me remember and enjoy this time. Past was always better? In music, I have to say “YES”.
Cheers my dear friend.

Hi Julio!
How exciting! Another AT40 alumni! Can I ask when is that 5-year period that you were really into the AT40?
Have a fab weekend as well.
ps to Julio and Johann…Keep your feet on the ground and keep reaching for the stars! Hehehe
Comment by Cisum— August 30, 2009 #
Hello there Cisum. Well…if my memory works as I wish..I think I began on Dec-85 till 90.
I remember, even it was not the time the single was “in the air”, my first Number One “The Reflex-Duran Duran”. I almost cried when I heared the maxi single for the first time.
I think the single it was more weeks in the number one was “Rent – Pet Shop Boys” 4 weeks in a raw but I need my papers ! I think “Kim Wilde – You keep me hanging on” was 4 weeks too.
After that, I tried several times to continue but I couldn’t. Not with the same patience and continuity.
I bought Billboard magazine when I could, it was difficult to find in Buenos Aires. I had some numbers at my mom’s house but my first was when Mariah Carey get the number one, for the first time with “Vision of love”, what an album !! I am so sorry for this girl…
Cheers my friend ! as I am in Mexico right now I will serve you a very good tequila !
Comment by Julio— August 30, 2009 #
Hi Johann! Very excited to chance upon your new site. It is Smashing!
It was such a Deja Vu to read about your induction into pop music. Like you, I had my “baptism” with Casey Kasem. I became his ardent follower in 1977, and made it a point to be home to sit by the radio for four solid hours, just to listen to his weekly Saturday countdown. I especially looked forward to his annual countdowns, and didn’t mind that eight hour special!
You discovered Casey in 1986. That was a solid year. Madonna’s True Blue. Janet Jackson’s Control. Cyndi Lauper’s True Colors. Anita Baker’s Rapture. Genesis’ Invisible Touch. Peter Gabriel’s So…and so on and so forth…
Anyway, I too copied those weekly and annual charts religiously. I would get excited when I my favourite song had the biggest leap in the charts, finally made #1, or remained the longest survivor in the Top 40. And I bet you have your own personal countdown chart too?
Well, I am glad to chance upon another like-minded music fan, and look forward to more of your posts and related trivias here.
Keep up the fabulous work! Vamos!
Comment by Cisum— August 29, 2009 #
Hi Cisum! Thanks for your words, the blog is one day old and your comment was a privilege to me as its first ever. I didn’t have my own chart but all my other friends who also listented to AT40 did! Yes, all those albums are incredible, “Rapture”, wow. Have a great weekend!
Comment by Johann— August 29, 2009 #
Johann, the pleasure is mine!
Lucky you, at least you have a group of friends who were also into AT40 back then, I have friends who also love music, but certainly not as fanatical as me. Hehehe. So I was quite alone in the AT40 world back then.
And yes, Rapture is a brilliant get-into-the-mood album that I can listen from start to finish. No weak links between.
You have a fab weekend too!
