Sade – By Your Side (UK CD Maxi Single)
November 27, 2009 at 1:54 AM | Posted in Sade | 17 CommentsTags: Ben Watt, Cottonbelly, Everything But The Girl, Naked Music, Neptunes, Sade
“By Your Side” is the lead single from English group Sade‘s fifth studio album, Lovers Rock. It was released in October 2000. The track was nominated for the 2002 Grammy Award for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance, losing out to Nelly Furtado‘s “I’m Like a Bird“. The video for this single was directed by Sophie Muller.
Chart Performance
“By Your Side” reached number seventy-five on the US Billboart Hot 100 chart, the week of January 20, 2001. It did better on the R&B/Hip-Hop chart landing at forty-one, and number two on the Dance/Club Play charts.
The Remixes
The Neptunes remix was the work of by now ultra famous Pharrell Williams, along with Chad Hugo. They are credited with contributing the sound for some successful Hip hop, R&B and Pop artists in the late-90s and 2000s.
I have no information on the producers of the Yard and Reggae remixes.
The Cottonbelly remix was created by one of Sade’s band members, Stuart Matthewman. He remixed other artists like Janet Jackson, Maxwell, and P.M. Dawn.
The Lazy Dog Remix was created by Ben Watt, best known as member of Everything but the Girl, along with his wife Tracey Thorn. He also remixed tracks by Zero 7, Maxwell, Meshell Ndegeocello.
The Naked Music Mix was produced by Naked Music. They have remixed artists such as Kelis, Maxwell, Sophie Ellis-Bextor and Britney Spears. This mix was not released on Sony, but I suspect it was officially licensed. Some sources claim it was created by Naked Music co-founder Jay Denes, also known as Bluesix, while others credit Miguel Migs, who has collaborated with Naked Music.

thanks for sharin these tracks, especially the ben watt remix. can you remember the source for that mix? there was a proper promo cdr and lots of whitelabels (with altering quality) with the ben watt mix on it.
sorry to say, guys, but most of the “unofficial” sade mixes are fake. kenny dope and louie vega (maw) never did a remix for ms adu. it’s easy to seperate the real remixes from the fake ones in case of sade tracks: if a acapella is used on top, you can be 99% sure it was done as the blueprint for an official release, ’cause there are no acapellas from sade available on the bootleggin scene.
thanks for your hard work, johann!

Hi Sven! The Ben Watt bonus mix I added was sent to me years ago. I would think it is from CD source because there are no traces of sibilance, no vinyl clicks or pops, and no signs of noise reduction, used to get rid of them (NR tends to cut off high frequencies). Thanks for your commments!

Sade LOATHES dance music, which is why the club mixes were not released commercially on the single, appearing only on promo single. A shame, as the Phillip Damien mixes of “Pearls” and Hani’s mixes of “I Never Thought I’d See The Day” are simply amazing.
The Lazy Dog mix was eventually released in a very low-key release.

Yes, I like those mixes! I don’t like the Ben Watt remix of “By Your Side”. As a matter of fact the only one I really like is the Cottonbelly remix.

I agree! didn’t MAW remixed Pearls as well in the mid 90s? Also love the unreleased House mixes of Kiss Of Life.
I must say, the official remixes for Sade singles have never been impressive. I’d take the album versions any time. Never As Good As The First Time is probably the exception. That 12″ is sublime.

I remember a “Pearls” MAW remix, but there were so many remixes I lost track. The remix for “Never As Good” is probably their best rework of an album version! There were some great remixes from the “Love Deluxe” era, will eventually post some. Have a great weekend guys!

Hi Yog,
Sade’s Best Of from the mid 90s is good starting point for you

Wow the back catalogue is amazing !!!
How come she has released so few albums so far ?
Its like she is a female George Michael , smooth operator indeed.
Ordinary Love is the fav track for me.

yes, Yog, Sade is not quite your typical popstar. They are quite prolific in the 80s, with Diamond Life in ’84, Promise in ’86, Stronger Than Pride in ’88. But since then…the albums are few and far in between. I suppose they are never fazed by the pop industry and like to do things their way and in their own sweet time.
My favourite is Kiss Of Life
